Bradentonís Motorworks Brewing has two interesting summer releases. The first is its wonderful Lavender Ale, a lush, lavender-infused scotch ale thatís going from draft-only to a full distribution run in 16-ounce cans. The second is an on-site exclusive, brewed in partnership with Tampaís Doc Bís Fresh Kitchen.
This isnít a first for this restaurant-brewery relationship: They also released Sunshine Suzi, a coconut-eucalyptus hefeweizen, in 2016.
Butterfly Effect builds on this exotic approach, taking another wheat beer ó this time a Belgian wit, flavored with orange zest and coriander ó and layering it with coconut, pineapple and orange-blossom water (water distilled with bitter orange blossoms). Flowers from the butterfly sweet-pea shrub added to the boil and during conditioning give the beer a surprising violet hue.
Itís difficult to describe the beerís aroma because there are so many unusual ingredients at work. It would be a complete mess were they not so complementary, with bright citrus notes accentuating fresh floral aromas against a backdrop of creamy coconut and coriander spice.
Its flavor follows suit, with a canít-quite-place-that-flavor range shifting in and out of the foreground as you drink. Thereís a mild bitterness in the middle, but itís smoothed out to the extent that it only adds depth.
There certainly is a belief that adding novel ingredients to a beer is enough to make it special, so itís reasonable to greet a new beer that boasts a cartoonish list of additives with skepticism. Fortunately, Butterfly Effect hits its marks, resulting in a brew is far more sophisticated than some gimmick beer with over-the-top flavors.
