St. Petersburg City Council expands reduced trash pickup program

ST. PETERSBURG -- More people will now be eligible for the city's once-per-week trash pickup program.

City Council on Thursday unanimously approved an expansion of the program, eliminating a requirement that homes be on lots smaller than 8,500 square feet. In its place, the Council added a requirement that qualifying homes must participate in the city's recycling program at least once per month.

City staff expect that change will make the program more accessible, as a majority of rejected applicants are turned down because of the lot size limit.

Most homes have their trash picked up twice a week. The once-per-week program saves residents $58.56 per year.
