Earlier this week, Packers QB Aaron Rodgers reportedly dissed rookie Marquez Valdes-Scantling by not naming him among the receivers who had been practicing the right way.
At least three other guys — including Spoto High alumnus Geronimo Allison — got a mention from Rodgers, but not the Pack's fifth-round pick from USF.
That's our quarterback," Valdes-Scantling said, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette. "So whenever he says we're not doing a good job, we have to own up to it and say, 'OK, we have to be better.'"
In Thursday's preseason opener against the Titans, Valdes-Scantling found redemption, not to mention the end zone.
The Lakewood High alumnus had a game-high five catches for 101 yards, breaking his route for a 15-yard touchdown catch over a Titans cornerback from reserve QB Tim Boyle, in a 31-17 win.
On a collectively sparkling preseason night for rookies from USF, Valdes-Scantling delivered the most luster. His night also included a 51-yard snag from DeShone Kizer on a second-and-30 situation in the third period.
"You never want to get too high, you never want to get too low," Valdes-Scantling told reporters afterward. "It was a great game. I'm going to live on it for a little bit, then move on and get ready for next week."
Other USF-centric highlights from Thursday's preseason action:
Eagles undrafted free-agent DT Bruce Hector had three tackles (including a sack), a quarterback hurry and forced fumble in a 31-14 loss to the Steelers.
UDFA D-tackle Bruce Hector just had a nice sack on Mason Rudolph. There’s room to rise on the DT depth chart, one of the weaker positions on the roster after Cox/with Jernigan out. That won’t hurt his cause. #Eagles— Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) August 10, 2018
Bills undrafted free-agent DE Mike Love had two tackles for loss in a 28-23 loss to the Panthers.
Colts second-year RB Marlon Mack had two receptions for 23 yards (and four carries for nine yards) in a 19-17 win against the Seahawks.
