Police arrest man in string of gym thefts across Tampa Bay

ST. PETERSBURG — A 28-year-old St. Louis man is being blamed by police for a string of gym robberies across the Tampa Bay region, according to police.

Cody Heilig, 28, was arrested on 11 felony charges by St. Petersburg police on Wednesday. Police said the thefts took place at three gyms in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties earlier this month.

Helig is accused of stealing vehicle keys from the locker rooms, police said, then he use those keys to gain access to vehicles and steal credit cards. He bought himself clothes and gift cards, police said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office helped St. Petersburg officers locate Heilig in the parking lot of a hotel in the city limits, police said.

He faces three counts of possession of a stolen credit card and three counts of fraudulent use of a credit car, two counts of auto burglary and single counts of armed auto burglary, grand theft and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Police said Helig is being investigated for a possible connection to other cases and he could face more charges in other counties. He was being held Thursday in the Pinellas County jail in lieu of $93,000 bail.
