Pasco County deputies have arrested a Land O’ Lakes man they say stole rare Japanese car tire rims shipped to the wrong address and attempted to sell them online.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Robert Martuszewski, 41, took a package containing the rims from outside a vacant home in August. He was arrested Friday, after the owner of the rims — valued at $7,000 — found them listed for sale on sales website OfferUp, deputies said.
He faces two felony charges: Grand theft and dealing in stolen property, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The rims were reported missing on Aug. 29, when the victim, who recently moved, went to retrieve them from his old address where he had them shipped by mistake, deputies said.
On Oct. 10, the victim alerted the Sheriff’s Office to an OfferUp post listing the rims for sale. Deputies attempted to contact the seller to purchase them two days later.
Martuszewski agreed to meet with detectives at the intersection of State Road 52 and U.S. Highway 41, where he was arrested after deputies confirmed the serial number on the rims.
He told investigators he had recently moved into the house where he found the rims, and had tried to contact the owner, but never heard back. The landlord, he said, told Martuszewski he could keep them.
Martuszewski was transported to the Pasco County jail and released a day later, after posting $500 bail, Sheriff’s Office records show.
