Police: Tarpon Springs man killed crossing road in wheelchair

TARPON SPRINGS — A 58-year-old man was killed Monday after a car struck him as he was crossing the road in a wheelchair.

According to Tarpon Springs police, Jon Pendleton, operating a manual wheelchair, started to cross U.S. 19 near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard about 11:30 p.m. just south of a crosswalk at a red light.

Witnesses told police that when Pendleton got to the lane closest to the median, he started waving his arms and yelling at cars. Scott McCullough, of New Port Richey, hit the wheelchair while driving a four-door 1995 Chevrolet.

The impact threw Pendleton from the chair into the lane second from the median, police said. Stevan Ramirez, of Tarpon Springs, struck Pendleton while driving a 2013 four-door Volkswagen.

Doctors pronounced Pendleton, of Tarpon Springs, dead early Tuesday at Florida Hospital North Pinellas.

Officers are still investigating the crash and ask that anyone with information call Officer Robert Gomez at (727) 938-2849.
