A portion of northbound Interstate 75 was closed Friday morning as crews tried to keep a dangling semi-trailer from going over the Trooper Jeff Young Memorial Bridge.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Troy Betts was heading north on I-75 near mile marker 224. He was headed over the Manatee River crossing named for slain FHP trooper Jeff Young when, he told troopers, a white vehicle cut him off as he drove in the center lane. He tried to avoid the vehicle, but lost control on the wet road surface.
Betts’ semi jack-knifed onto the west shoulder, crashing into the bridge face and sending the cab, with him in it, over the side.
FHP said traffic was backed up to mile marker 220 as crews, including tow trucks and a crane, worked to right the overhanging semi.
After Betts was safely rescued, the semi was cleared and all lanes reopened just after 9 a.m., FHP spokesperson Lt. Greg Bueno said.
The crash is under investigation.
