Spring Hill man, 22, killed in apparent home invasion

SPRING HILL - A 22-year-old man died Tuesday morning, deputies said, after he was beaten and shot during an apparent home invasion.

Alek Nathaniel Smith was found by Hernando County Sheriff's deputies who responded to a home invasion report at 12271 Legend St., where Smith lived. He was was transported to an area hospital and died from his injuries, deputies said.

A 21-year-old woman and a two-year-old child were also at the house during the invasion, deputies said. The woman had minor injuries, and the child was uninjured.

Deputies said the incident does not appear to be random and may be drug related. It is still under investigation.
