Surveillance camera captures video of plane crashing into building in South Florida as children flee

A surveillance video captured dramatic video of a plane crash landing in a parking lot, slamming into a building and catching fire Saturday in Fort Lauderdale.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that a pilot and passenger were killed in the crash. They were not identified as of Monday and a cause of the crash had not been determined. Federal officials are investigating.

The newspaper reported the plane was a Cessna and that the video was released Monday by a business owner based at the complex. After the crash, several people -- including children -- are seen fleeing the building just feet away from the raging fire. The Sun Sentinel said five children and eight instructors had been at an autism therapy center.

"The teachers of that center are the true heroes in this situation, for their quick response and getting the children out of the building," Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan told the newspaper.

No other injuries were reported.

The Sun Sentinel said the plane had taken off from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. The building it hit is across the street from the airport.
