The Valrico Village Players open their new show, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, with a dinner theater at 8 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 7) at the James McCabe Theater, 506 Fifth St. in Valrico. The dinner is sponsored by La Septima, and will feature the restaurant's famous chicken and yellow rice.
The play follows Beth Bradley as she prepares for a role in her church's Christmas pageant. The show is predictable every year with the angel choir wearing too much lipstick, the shepherds in their father's bathrobes and the minister's son is permanently cast in the role of Joseph. It's hardly four-star entertainment.
When authoritative pageant director Mrs. Armstrong breaks her leg, it's up to Beth's inexperienced mother Grace to step in. The timing couldn't be worse as the rambunctious Herdman children, a rough and tough group of siblings determined to snag all the roles..
Mary Robinson's The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is based on her novel of the same name, is a beloved Christmas tale warm and funny which is filled with characters both relatable and unique. The large cast and age range make this show a community favorite.
Along with the chicken and yellow rice, La Septima will serve black beans, salad with their homemade salad dressing and Cuban bread. Complimentary Ice tea and water will be available along with dessert. Sodas and coffee are available for a $2 charge.
Tickets are $35 each and due to limited seating reservations need to be made in advance. Doors open at 7 p.m. Regular show dates are at 8 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 8), Dec. 14 and Dec. 15.
