Herbie Hancock, Michael McDonald, ‘Generation Axe,’ more coming to Clearwater

It's shaping up to be a sizzling week in Clearwater, as Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Capitol Theatre on Tuesday dropped a hot slate of concert announcements on Tampa Bay fans.

Herbie Hancock, Michael McDonald, Mary Chapin Carpenter and an all-star tour of guitar gods will all play the theaters in the coming months. Here's a rundown:

Mary Chapin Carpenter: The Grammy-winning country and folk singer-songwriter will return to the Capitol Theatre on Oct. 11 in support of her new album Sometimes Just the Sky, featuring retooled versions of past songs. Tickets to the show start at $49 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday. Click here.

Michael McDonald: A year after performing at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, McDonald will return to the Capitol Theatre, where in 2013 he was the first headliner after a $10.7-million renovation. He'll be there on Nov. 23 for a concert of hits and holiday songs, including tunes from his forthcoming album Season of Peace: The Christmas Collection. Tickets, starting at $84, go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, and each one includes a copy of the album. Click here.

Generation Axe: Guitar geeks, rejoice. A handful of certifiable shredders are joining forces for this year's Generation Axe tour, including Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Yngvie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt and Animals As Leaders' Tosin Abasi. They'll play hits of their own and square off in epic axe showdowns on Dec. 11 at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Tickets are $32.75 and up and go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. Click here.

Herbie Hancock: This might be the biggest of the bunch. It's been years since the legendary jazz fusion (and former Miles Davis bandmate) pioneer came through Tampa Bay. He'll return to Ruth Eckerd Hall on Feb. 15. Tickets are $53.75. Click here.

These aren't the only concerts announced for Ruth Eckerd and the Cap this week — there's also Masters of Illusion (Jan. 20, Ruth Eckerd Hall), Star Wars Episode IV: The Empire Strikes Back Live (Jan. 26, Ruth Eckerd Hall), Paul Thorn (Feb. 8, Capitol Theatre) and Jim Brickman (Feb. 24). All those shows go on sale this week, too. Click here for details on them all.
