Rays send down Willy Adames, add Chih-Wei Hu to bullpen

The Rays, as we reported Wednesday night, have optioned top prospect SS Willy Adames to Triple-A Durham.

RHP Chih-Wei Hu was called up to take his roster spot in adding an extra arm to the bullpen.

When Adames was called up top last month,  team officials said he was here to stay.

But he hasn't been playing regularly with their glut of infielders, including still not traded SS Adeiny Hechavarria, and hasn't been hitting well when he has, with just a .216 average and .604 OPS.

The Rays obviously decided that Adames, 22, would be better served playing every day at Durham, including through the upcoming four-day All-Star break.

Hu has been up twice for short stints this season, pitching in one game. At Triple-A Durham, he has a 3-6, 4.66 record.

INF Christian Arroyo (oblique) could have been a candidate to replace Adames but needs a little bit more time on rehab and will play tonight for Durham.
