Live from Port Charlotte: Physicals, news conference and a completed Romo deal

Today is the first official day of spring training for the Rays, though it's a day for physicals and other administrative issues, with the first workout for pitchers and catchers on Wednesday.

There was some news already this morning, as the Rays made official the re-signing of veteran reliever Sergio Romo, who got $2.5-million for one year, plus a $250,000 bonus if he gets traded.

Romo pitched well for the Rays in the second half of last season after being acquired from the Dodgers. He had been an All-Star, and a post-season star, during a long career with the Giants.

Romo provides an experienced closing option if the Rays do trade Alex Colome at some point.

The Rays still have to make a move to create space on the 40-man roster for Romo. That could mean designating a player for assignment or stalling to see if a trade comes together for starter Jake Odorizzi.

Among those taking physicals today was minor-league field coordinator Jim Hoff, who is starting his 51st spring training.

Manager Kevin Cash, GM Erik Neander and senior VP Chaim Bloom will hold the annual pre-spring media session at 12:30 today in Port Charlotte. The Times will provide coverage.

Also, the Rays may learn today the outcome of Monday's arbitration hearing with Odorizzi. He sought $6.35-million, they offered $6.05-million.
