SUN CITY CENTER — Authorities have released the name of a Hillsborough County firefighter who was injured on the way to a call Tuesday when he fell out of a fire truck.

Steven Dowd, 46, was riding in the passenger seat of the truck when it left Station 28 at 4551 Sun City Blvd. on the way to a call about 5:30 p.m., according to the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office. As the truck turned onto Sun City Center Boulevard, Dowd fell out and landed on the roadway.

Dowd was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital to be treated for serious injuries that were not life-threatening, deputies said.

County officials were still reviewing the incident Wednesday, county spokeswoman Michelle Van Dyke said.

Dowd joined Hillsborough County Fire Rescue in November 2005 and his current position is driver/engineer, Van Dyke said.
